Process

When exploring Buzz’s personality and the problems he faces in the film, I found that a lot of his issues all stem from the same factor - he thinks he is a real space ranger. This loss of identity for Buzz is the core factor that impacts a lot of his behaviour, causing impulsive actions and leading to tensions in his relationships.

Exploring Buzz’s character

Character mood-board

After identifying several of Buzz’s key challenges, I began sketching initial concepts for products aimed at helping him navigate his psychological struggles. One idea involved a parachute designed to prevent injury when Buzz overestimates his abilities, such as attempting to fly. I also explored themes of escapism to help Buzz reconnect with his space ranger persona—an identity he feels increasingly distant from.

Initial Ideas

I selected three of my initial ideas to develop further into distinct concepts—each addressing Buzz’s identity crisis and the depression he faces after learning the truth. These products focus on helping Buzz reconnect with the space ranger he once was, while ensuring he can embrace his fantasy without letting it overshadow his reality.

3 Concepts

Concept 1 - VR headset

Concept 2 - Immersive projector

Concept 3 - Arcade machine

After considering my three routes, I decided to move forward with the arcade machine, as it felt the most relevant to the context of the film. 90’s technology was not yet advanced enough to see the likes of VR headsets and modern projectors, whereas arcades were buzzing in the 90’s. I experimented with some initial designs, using bold contrasts and space illustrations.

Developing the Final Concept

Mockup of initial design direction

I wasn’t completely happy with the design at this stage, as it felt too flat and lacked the vibrant aesthetics characteristic of 90s arcade design. To address this, I created a new mood board inspired by the neon visuals of Pizza Planet featured in several film scenes, aiming to incorporate this bold and dynamic visual direction moving forward.

Re-thinking the Visual Direction

Brand Illustrations

I re-drew several of the space-themed illustrations featured on the packaging, incorporating a more vibrant colour palette and adding depth through gradients and textures. This significantly enhanced the design, making it feel more aligned with the visuals seen in the film. Additionally, I started sketching logo concepts for 'Pixel Planet,' a name inspired by the Pizza Planet with a game inspired twist.
